Perhaps you can recall a time where you needed to really dig deep to deal with stress. Other times, we can relax and enjoy the flow of life because we have a handle on things. From the daily hurdles to the big jumps that can trip us up for weeks, I find that learning to pay attention to your breathing for a short period of time is a helpful skill to have in your toolbox. One problem seems to be that we forget to stop and take a break. A moment to pause and just check in with ourselves for this very purpose, to breathe. It always blows my mind to think of how much goes on when we go about the automatic process of breathing. What is a Nurse Practitioner?

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) hear this sometimes, as our role is not always clear to the public.   So what is an NP?   An NP is a registered nurse (RN) who has gone on to a Master’s or Doctoral program.   A Psychiatric Mental Health NP (PMHNP) specializes in Psychiatry.   The laws for practice differ from state to state.   In Illinois, where our practice Genesis Clinical Services is based, NPs can write prescriptions like a psychiatrist, but we have a collaborating physician.   The collaborating physician is available for questions and provides supervision throughout your care.   The Psych NPs have courses in Advance Physical Assessment, Advanced Pharmacology, Psychopharmacology, Advanced Pathophysiology, as well as a series of courses in preparation to prescribe and conduct therapy.   There are also 500+ hours of
